This last Saturday (October 24, 2014) one of short-course off road racing’s most dominating drivers, Kyle LeDuc, was crowned the 2014 Pro4 Unlimited Class Champion after an amazing two days of competition in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) finale held at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park, located in Lake Elsinore, California. LeDuc also took the win in the highly-anticipated Lucas Oil Cup Challenge, gathering the trophy, title, and the winner’s purse of $30,000.
The competition was fierce during the first race of the day with superbly talented and competitive drivers such as Cory Weller and brother Curt LeDuc, who were the front row starters for the Round 14 (a make-up race due to the rainout at the last event in Las Vegas) Pro4 bout. Also right on Kyle’s tail were hot shoes like Rob MacCachren, Ricky Johnson, and Greg Adler. It didn’t seem to matter though, as Kyle took over the race right off the start and never looked back.
For the final points race of the season held Saturday early evening, Adler showed keen driving ability by leading the pack for the first six of 14 laps. In the mix were once again some of the best of the best in short-course off road racing. As a matter of fact, almost every major Pro4 driver was in on this one: Johnny Greaves, Johnny’s son CJ Greaves, Brian Deegan (in his Pro4 debut driving Scott Douglas’ truck), Greg Adler, and Carl Renezeder. Kyle had started the round in second (due to his second fastest qualifying time), tugged on leader Adler’s coat tails until muscling by him on the sixth lap, then kept the lead to the finish.
The Lucas Oil Challenge Cup was the last event of the night and meshed Pro4 and Pro2 for a titanic battle for the title, trophy, and big money. The points races for the season were over, class crowns had been decided, and the competitors had months to repair or rebuild. There was nothing to lose. Again, every big name in the biz was there, and there were no holds barred. After blasting through nearly the entire Pro2 field (which starts a half-lap ahead of the Pro4s for this event), Kyle had quickly moved up to fifth position, and then began choosing safe moves and picking off people one by one. He was leading the pack by lap 16, and held that position to the checkered flag.
However, this weekend of victories was just the icing on the cake. Aside from dramatic wins at the LOORRS Finale weekend, Kyle LeDuc took 12 wins out of the 16 races during the 2014 season, and was the 2012 Pro4 champ, and 2013 runner-up. He was also awarded Driver of the Year during the LOORRS awards banquet on Sunday.
If that’s not enough to prove Kyle’s domination of short-course off road racing, he went to Crandon, Wisconsin, this year during Labor Day Weekend, stormed the competition with back-to-back victories, and took home the TORC (The Off Road Championship) World Championship Ring and the series’ top prize, the AMSOIL Cup.
So who can beat Kyle LeDuc? Brian Deegan, who debuted in Pro4 at the LOORRS Finale event and finished second behind LeDuc might have a chance if he was to continue in Pro4. After all, Deegan scored the 2014 Pro2 Championship, his third in four years. Sheldon Creed might have a chance if he ran Pro4 – he’s young and talented, and took the ProLite crown for the 2014 season.
There are a few others that are real contenders, such as Rob MacCachren, who ended the season second overall in Pro4. Ricky Johnson was third overall in Pro4. Only time will tell. What we do know for sure is that the 2015 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season will be another exciting chase to the crown, and Kyle LeDuc is the man to beat.
