Despite being one of the best-selling vehicles in the world, year in and year out, the Ford F-150 is only available in North America. That means the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and pretty much nowhere else. But Ford is bucking that tradition, sort of, by announcing that the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor Supercrew will be crossing the Pacific to go on sale in China, of all places.
It seems like the last place a Ford Raptor would find a home, but the Blue Oval is simply responding to demand of its overseas customers. But will this open the F-150 floodgates to the rest of the world?
Apparently, yes, because at the bottom of the press release Ford announced that the 2017 F-150 lineup will be available in 96 markets around the globe. While not quite as prolific as the 140 marks the new global Mustang is sold in, it’s clearly a move designed to meet growing customer demand for Ford’s stellar U.S. lineup.
Chinese truck fans are reportedly paying upwards of $160,000 to buy and import the last-generation Raptor to the mainland, but Ford doesn’t see any of that money, so why not cut out the middleman and give Chinese buyers exactly what they want.
When it doe arrive in China, the 2017 Raptor (which would only be exported as a Supercrew model) will had lights added to its roof to meet local highway regulations. Otherwise, it’s going to have the same 411 horsepower 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, ten-speed automatic transmission, and six driving modes that Americans will enjoy. It’s been over a year since the new Raptor was revealed, and production is slated to start this fall for markets near and far.
