American automakers are slowly but surely backing away from big, fuel-hungry V8 engines as fuel economy standards and emissions regulations get stricter. It’s not just the government that’s demanding more fuel-efficient vehicles either though. Many consumers simply can’t afford to drive big SUVs like the Ford Expedition anymore, as the atrocious fuel economy can cost more in burnt fuel than the monthly payments.
Ford has promised to add its line of EcoBoost engines to every model in its lineup, and next on that list is the 2015 Ford Expedition. While the other improvements are mostly fancy tech features or luxury items, the EcoBoost engine changes the dynamics of the Expedition dramatically.
While Ford isn’t talking specific power numbers yet, we’re expecting the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 to deliver the same 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque found in the F-150. But power should be delivered on a much smoother plane versus the outgoing 5.4 liter V8 engine the Expedition was saddled with. The EcoBoost V6 is the only engine option going forward for the Expedition, and the removal of the 5.4 liter V8 means the end of an era as well.
Other than the EcoBoost engine, the 2015 Ford Expedition got some fairly basic updates, like optional push-button start and two new LCD screens on the gauge cluster. The top-level Platinum trim adds all sorts of additional luxury features like MyFord Touch and blind spot warning systems to help you navigate this massive machine across America’s roads.
