From our tour of SEMA 2018 comes an incredibly practical and purpose-built two-way Jeep Wrangler JK radio from Daystar Products. Designed to be easily accessible but never obstructive, this kit allows full control of the vehicle’s stereo, while positioning the mount and switches out of peripheral vision.
SEMA 2018: Daystar Products GMRS two-way Jeep Wrangler Radio
By mounting this kit in-between the two visors, Daystar has made interference with gear selection or E-braking a thing of the past. Attaching easily with four screws in OE mounting points, the GMRS two-way radio utilizes a set of clips to prevent dislodging while off-roading on treacherous terrain. This radio reportedly works with both hard and soft top versions of the new Jeep Wrangler, and can be installed with little more than a screwdriver and 1/8-inch drill bit for DIY installation.
Wiring is super-simple too, with coaxial, ground, and power wires being the key three, as well as a layout that can easily be modified to house additional switches. Daystar tells us that there’s also an inline fuse for protecting against power surges, pinches, lightning strikes, and various other electrical gremlins.
One of our favorite things about the Daystar GMRS two-way radio is that as opposed to traditional two-way designs, this setup is supported by a vast network of repeaters, with an estimated 1,600 nationwide. So reaching someone in another state with the GMRS unit is completely possible with the right repeaters lined up.
As for line-of-sight usage, the Daystar GMRS two-way radio can reach 10-15 miles with enough wiggle room, is waterproof, packs 30 wide-open channels, is a VHMF radio, is rated at 25 watts, and has a 64 IP rating. It also comes standard with four accessory switches in different colors (which can be replaced with various other aftermarket switches) for plug-and-play usage right away, or for down the line when additional mods need to be made, like a light bar or something of that nature.
