IMG_1595Whether stuck in mud, snow, sand, or high-centered on rocks, if you’re going to have your 4×4 hauled out of trouble, it’s probably only going to happen if you or your buddy have a winch on hand. ComeUp USA’s new winch, the Walrus, can help extract you or someone else from a sticky situation.

Rod Bogle, operations manager for ComeUp USA, gave us the skinny on this new product’s performance. For starters, it’s available as either the 16.5- (16,500-lb. capacity) or 20.0- (20,000-lb. capacity) model.

It comes with an IP 68 rating, which means it allows absolutely no ingress of dust; nor an ingress of water, rated at up to 1.8 meters. This comes to the fully sealed contactor and motor, as well as a military-grade remote control and twist-on connector, keeping the electronics free of outside elements that could short out, jam up, or otherwise incapacitate the device. Also, a protective thermal sensor LED on the waterproof remote control keeps you informed of the motor’s temperature status, to help from accidentally overheating it.

Cutaways from the winch displayed the contactor/motor setup (left) and patented cone brake (right).

The unit uses materials like die-cast aluminum alloy for the housing, a rubberized double lip and spring seal at the drum housings, and a hardened steel three-stage planetary gear train. It follows then that getting stuck in the mud, snow, or deep water should not stop this winch from working to get you out of a jam.

Even when performing at its maximum capacity, the Walrus 20.0 was able to to perform at 2.3 feet-per-minute. Its little brother, the Walrus 16.5, could do the same at a rate of 2.0 feet-per-minute.

When it comes to awesome, reliable power, it looks like ComeUp USA has it made with their Walrus line. Go check out the company’s website, and give them a “Like” on Facebook as well.
