Richard Hammond bought that exact Top Gear Land Rover after filming. He disassembled the truck, drilled out every rivet, and left the parts scattered. Cleaning The Bare Metal

The original engine required serious attention before reassembly. Because the block sat in terrible condition, Hammond brought in Rob. A specialist from CKD. They stripped the unit to bare metal and sent it out for acid dipping. Rob noted, “So, full strip everything out, bearings, you name it, the whole shebang,” while discussing the prep work. After cleaning the grime, machinists bored the cylinders and ground the crankshaft. The crew balanced all internal moving parts to guarantee a smooth idle.

Flipping the heavy block over allowed the pair to tackle the lubrication system for this Top Gear Land Rover. They dropped a fresh oil pump into the crankcase and adjusted the pressure relief valve. This motor originally suffered from a design error that starved the camshaft. To fix this, they installed a replacement camshaft alongside updated followers. They finished by tapping the rocker shaft into place.

Installing The Cylinder Head

Once the bottom end was secure, the mechanics placed a thick copper gasket onto the block and lowered the cylinder head. Because the slanted block requires varying head bolt lengths, proper torque sequence was important to prevent warping. After installing the flywheel housing, they lined up the factory timing marks. A new timing chain linked the top and bottom sections. To ensure a safe build, Hammond spun the crankshaft to verify the valves cleared the pistons.
