AWDROLA Takes On The Mint 400: From Viral Concept To Desert Contender

Some race vehicles are born in high-end fabrication shops or backed by massive budgets. Others start as a wild idea shared online. The AWDROLA falls squarely in the latter category—and now, that once-viral concept is lining up for one of the most legendary off-road races in North America.

Randy Wimenta and co-driver Will Wimenta will pilot their custom-built 1989 Toyota Corolla GT-S, known as AWDROLA, in the 2026 Mint 400 Gambler/Hooptie-X Modified class under American Off-Road Racing, a partnership between UNLTD Off-Road Racing and BITD. What began as a creative Instagram rendering in 2020 has evolved into a fully sanctioned desert race entry—proof that passion projects can take on a life of their own.

The Corolla Nobody Expected

At first glance, a late-’80s Corolla might seem like an unlikely desert racer. But AWDROLA was never meant to follow conventional off-road logic.

Originally conceived as a tribute to Ivan “Ironman” Stewart and Toyota’s storied desert racing heritage, the build blends vintage Toyota DNA with modern off-road engineering. The project started as a creative exercise—a retro-inspired concept imagining what an all-wheel-drive desert Corolla might look like if Toyota’s rally roots met Baja ingenuity.

Then the idea took off.

The AWDROLA debuted publicly at Off-Road Expo and later appeared at SEMA, where the unexpected mashup of economy-car sheetmetal and desert-racing attitude caught the attention of enthusiasts and international automotive media alike.

Now the project enters its biggest chapter yet.

“We want to prove that a rebuilt 1989 Toyota platform can still run hard in the desert,” said Randy Wimenta. “This project started as a creative build paying homage to Toyota’s rally and desert off-road racing heritage.”

Building A Desert Corolla

Transforming a compact commuter into a desert-ready machine required far more than creative vision. AWDROLA’s foundation starts with an AE92 Corolla GT-S chassis, but beneath the skin the car has undergone a serious off-road metamorphosis.

Power is routed through an AE95 All-Trac all-wheel-drive drivetrain, giving the Corolla traction capabilities far beyond what its original designers ever imagined.

Suspension and durability upgrades were critical to surviving the brutal terrain of the Mint 400. The car features a Barnes 4WD four-link rear suspension system, paired with Eibach dual-spring setups front and rear to help absorb desert punishment.

Up front, a custom Streetwise/Bilstein strut system keeps the compact chassis planted, while Bilstein 8125 coilovers with remote reservoirs handle the rear suspension duties. Custom Dana Spicer front CV axles ensure the AWD system can handle the abuse.

The build rides on Raceline 16×8 wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich KO2 tires, a proven off-road combination designed to deliver traction across rock, sand, and hardpack desert terrain.

Safety and structure were also major priorities. The car features a Dempsey Fabrication roll cage and structural subframe integration, along with full competition safety and recovery systems.

Lighting comes courtesy of KC HiLiTES, including a Gravity Titan lightbar, FLEX ERA 4 bumper lights, and Cyclone accessory lighting to illuminate the desert when the sun drops behind the Nevada mountains.

Garage-Built Spirit

Before heading to the Mint, the AWDROLA spent time proving itself in the dirt.

The vehicle participated in Gambler 500 and Hooptie-X events, serving as shakedown runs to evaluate durability and performance. Those outings helped the team refine the platform and prepare it for the far more demanding conditions of a true desert race.

Currently, co-driver and fabricator Will Wimenta is finishing race preparations at Shift Auto & Off-Road in Santa Ana, California, reinforcing suspension and steering components and completing the technical updates required for contingency and inspection.

The goal is simple: survive—and surprise people along the way.

Capturing The Spirit Of The Mint

The Mint 400 has long been one of the crown jewels of American off-road racing. Known as “The Great American Off-Road Race,” it draws both professional race teams and grassroots builders willing to throw their machines into the Nevada desert for a shot at glory.

For vehicles like AWDROLA, the Gambler/Hooptie-X Modified class celebrates the race’s original spirit.

“The Gambler/Hooptie-X class captures the original spirit of the Mint,” said Matt Martelli, CEO of UNLTD Off-Road Racing. “It’s about creativity, determination, and teams bringing whatever they built in their garage and putting it to the test in the desert. We welcome every Gambler/Hooptie-X racer willing to line up and take their shot, including creative builds like AWDROLA. Fans can catch all the action live on the Unlimited Offroad Racing YouTube page.”

That grassroots energy makes AWDROLA a perfect fit.

A Full-Circle Journey

For those involved in the project, the Mint 400 represents far more than just another off-road race. It’s the culmination of years of creativity, community, and relentless enthusiasm for motorsports.

“At KC, we’ve always believed that legacy is built by people willing to dream beyond the render,” said Alan Wang, CEO of KC HiLiTES. “When Randy joined us nearly a decade ago, he carried a deep respect for heritage, culture, and the emotional power of cars and motorsport. Watching this project move from a concept parked on Instagram to competing in the Mint 400 is a full-circle moment. It reminds all of us that when passion is anchored to purpose, ideas can move from spark to flame and from imagination to action.”

The journey has also been shaped by the off-road community surrounding the project.

“Being surrounded by an incredible community of fabricators, grassroots racers, and desert legends is truly inspiring,” said Taylor Ulrich, Director of Brand Marketing at KC HiLiTES. “I watched Randy start as a DIY Jeeper and slowly catch the racing bug simply by being around people who genuinely love this sport and what it represents. Racing the Mint 400 demands commitment, courage, and perseverance. We’re proud to support Randy and Will as they take the AWDROLA on the biggest journey of its life and line up for their first-ever desert off-road race.”

From Instagram Dream To Desert Reality

Pronounced “Odd-Rolla,” the AWDROLA represents a rare blend of nostalgia, creativity, and grassroots determination.

First revealed publicly in 2022, the project quickly gained traction across the automotive world, appearing at major industry events and drawing attention from enthusiasts around the globe.

But the true test was always going to happen in the desert.

At the 2026 Mint 400, the little Corolla that started as an Instagram rendering will finally face the terrain, punishment, and unpredictability that define desert racing.

And whether it finishes first or last, AWDROLA has already accomplished something remarkable: proving that even the most unlikely ideas can evolve into real race cars—if someone is crazy enough to build them.
