27North TR-27 Expedition Rig: Big Ram Presence Meets Overland Comfort

Let’s be honest. The 27North TR-27 isn’t subtle. A Ram 5500 sitting on 40-inch tires with a monolithic carbon-fiber habitation module doesn’t blend into trailhead parking lots—and that alone makes us absolutely love it. It has real presence. But in this case, the size and stance aren’t just for show. They’re the byproducts of building a true long-range expedition vehicle from the ground up.

Built in Springfield, Missouri, the TR-27 starts with a 2026 Ram 5500 Crew Cab 4×4 chassis powered by the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel that’s paired with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission. The platform has a 19,500-pound GVWR and can tow between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds, depending on configuration. This beefy commercial-grade foundation enables the truck to support its integrated carbon-fiber module and all systems without compromising durability.

Engineered For Four-Season Travel

The TR-27 is designed to operate in environments ranging from -25°F to 125°F. Supporting that kind of temperature spread is quite a feat in itself. The Marine Concepts carbon-fiber shell provides rigidity and corrosion resistance while reducing weight compared to traditional materials. High-performance insulation, double-pane windows, diesel-powered heat, and integrated 48-volt air conditioning form a cohesive climate system. Best of all, these systems are engineered into the platform from the start rather than layered on later.

Suspension That Matches The Scale

On a vehicle this size, ride quality and stability can make or break the experience. The TR-27 uses Liquid Spring adaptive suspension with True Earth leveling, allowing it to dynamically adjust to changing terrain and stabilize when parked on uneven ground. Paired with 40-inch off-road tires, reinforced steel bumpers, and integrated front and rear winches, the truck is built for real backcountry travel—the kind you talk about around the campfire years later.

A Self-Sufficient Living System

Inside, the TR-27 is configured to seat five (in the Ram’s cab) and likewise sleep up to five. The cab-over primary sleeping area features a king-size bed, and a convertible queen configuration adds flexibility for families or expedition partners. Aluminum interior construction and weather-resistant flooring prioritize durability, while cabinetry and finishes can be customized to suit individual preferences.

The electrical system centers on three 5-kWh lithium batteries paired with a 3,600-watt inverter and solar integration rated at roughly 350-750 watts, depending on the specification. A 50-gallon fresh water tank, a 20-gallon gray tank, an interior shower, an exterior-access cassette toilet, and on-demand hot water support extended off-grid use. A centralized digital control system ties everything together, giving occupants clear oversight of energy and water systems.

Purposeful Scale

With a starting MSRP of $575,000, the TR-27 occupies the upper tier of the American expedition truck market. It’s visually commanding, undeniably large, and unapologetically robust. But for overlanders planning for comfortably epic adventures—across deserts, into winter mountain passes, or far beyond cellular coverage—the scale makes sense.

The TR-27 is built to thoughtfully and purposefully carry everything required for serious, self-supported exploration—while making you actually want to do it more than once.
