Old-School Cool: This 1979 Toyota Pickup Steals The Show At SEMA

There’s something refreshing about walking through the SEMA Show and finding a vehicle that doesn’t need four-digit horsepower, an outrageous engine swap, or enough suspension travel to tackle the Baja 1000 to grab your attention. Sometimes, all it takes is a perfectly executed classic truck, a little nostalgia, and a whole lot of personality.

That pretty much sums up this bright orange 1979 Toyota Pickup, displayed in the Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels booth at the 2026 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Built by Always Yota, the vintage short-bed Toyota combines period-correct styling with thoughtfully selected upgrades, creating a truck that looks like it could have rolled straight out of an off-road enthusiast’s driveway in the early 1980s.

And if the truck itself doesn’t bring back memories, the vintage Honda three-wheeler sitting in the bed certainly will.

A Classic Toyota With Just The Right Upgrades

The foundation for this build is a 1979 Toyota Pickup, identified as limited-edition truck number 340 of 1,089. While modern Toyota pickups have grown considerably in size, capability, and complexity, this little truck represents an era when four-wheel-drive pickups were relatively simple machines built around durability and practicality.

Rather than reinventing the truck, Always Yota embraced those qualities.

Under the hood is Toyota’s 20R four-cylinder engine, a powerplant that helped establish the brand’s reputation for reliability. The engine retains its original character while benefiting from an LC Engineering header and MagnaFlow exhaust. Zinc-plated miscellaneous hardware adds a finishing touch to the engine compartment.

Power travels through a four-speed L43 manual transmission, keeping the driving experience appropriately old-school.

The suspension follows a similar philosophy. Old Man Emu shocks and a steering damper work alongside three-inch Rough Country front suspension components and rear leaf springs. Extended brake lines round out the chassis upgrades.

None of these modifications is particularly extravagant by modern SEMA standards. That’s exactly why they work. The truck maintains its vintage personality while gaining the stance and capability expected of a traditional off-road build.

Mickey Thompson Wheels And Tires Complete The Look

Of course, a truck displayed in the Mickey Thompson booth needs the right rolling stock, and this Toyota doesn’t disappoint.

The pickup rides on 255/90R16 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T tires mounted to 16×8 MT Canyon wheels with an 8×5.5-inch bolt pattern. The relatively tall, narrow tires give the truck an unmistakably traditional off-road appearance while complementing its modest dimensions.

The Baja Boss A/T is Mickey Thompson’s aggressive all-terrain offering, designed to balance off-road traction with everyday usability. On this Toyota, the tires reinforce the vintage trail-truck aesthetic without overwhelming the vehicle.

Polished wheels, chrome-plated front and rear bumpers, and factory-inspired graphics add to the nostalgic appearance. Inside, the restored stock interior continues the theme rather than introducing unnecessary modern distractions.

And then there’s the finishing touch: a red 1984 Honda ATC displayed in the bed. The three-wheeler, visibly badged as a 200S, turns an already appealing classic Toyota into something that looks ready for a weekend adventure circa 1985.

It’s a simple addition, but one that makes the whole display feel complete.

A Throwback Build With A Modern Message

While the Toyota celebrates the past, Mickey Thompson used the 2026 SEMA Show to demonstrate how its current tire and wheel offerings continue to serve enthusiasts building everything from vintage four-wheel-drives to modern trail rigs.

One of the company’s biggest announcements was the expansion of its Baja Boss A/T and Baja Boss M/T tire families, with 29 new SKUs covering a wide range of applications.

The expanded lineup includes traditional 15- and 16-inch fitments for classic off-road vehicles, along with tall, narrow tires commonly called “pizza cutters.” Those narrower configurations are especially relevant to builds like this Toyota, where additional ground clearance and reduced tire weight can be desirable without resorting to excessive width.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mickey Thompson is adding aggressive 37-, 38-, and 40-inch fitments for serious off-road builds. Additional 20- and 24-inch options serve the custom truck market, while new hard-metric sizes expand Baja Boss A/T availability for modern SUVs and four-wheel-drives.

The company also announced new MT Classic Forged wheel sizes, including 15×14, 16×14, and 16×16 configurations. These wheels combine classic styling with forged construction and multiple bolt-pattern options, catering to enthusiasts seeking an era-appropriate appearance with modern manufacturing.

Although this Toyota wears MT Canyon wheels rather than the newly expanded Classic Forged lineup, it illustrates the same underlying philosophy: the right combination of wheels and tires can define an entire build.

“Whether someone is chasing a quicker pass, building a trail rig or reimagining a classic truck, we want to give them the tires and wheels to build it their way,” explained Matt Arko, Mickey Thompson’s general manager of marketing and product.

Sometimes Less Really Is More

That’s ultimately what makes this 1979 Toyota Pickup such a compelling SEMA build. It’s not trying to compete with the biggest, fastest, or most expensive trucks in Las Vegas.

Instead, it celebrates a time when a lifted pickup, a set of capable tires, and a three-wheeler in the bed were practically the definition of a perfect weekend.

For Mickey Thompson, the truck provides a fitting connection between the company’s off-road heritage and its expanding modern product lineup. Whether enthusiasts are restoring a vintage Toyota, building a dedicated rock crawler, or modifying a new pickup, the underlying motivation remains remarkably similar.

Build something that reflects your personality, equip it for the adventures you enjoy, and don’t forget to have a little fun along the way.

This orange Toyota gets all three exactly right.
