Transmission Swap Option: Dodge NV3500 To Tremec TR-4050 With Its Rad 6.16:1 First Gear Ratio

Do you drive a 1993-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 with the factory NV3500 five-speed manual transmission? If so, heads up, American Powertrain has unveiled its new ProFit HD 4WD kit for said vehicle. This kit replaces the factory transmission with a beefy Tremec TR-4050 five-speed manual transmission. What are the benefits of the American Powertrain ProFit HD swap? Well, there are several, including the TR-4050’s “granny” 6.16:1 First gear ratio. Read on for the details.

American Powertrain ProFit HD For The 1993-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4

One of the benefits of the TR-4050 manual transmission is its wide gear ratio. It offers a 6.16:1 First gear, 3.11:1 Second gear, 1.71:1 Third gear, 1.00:1 Fourth gear, and 0.76:1 Fifth gear. For comparison, the 1993-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 NV3500 has a 4.02:1 First gear, 2.32:1 Second gear, 1.40:1 Third gear, 1.00:1 Fourth gear, and 0.73:1 Fifth gear. Most interesting to off-roaders is the “granny” 6.16:1 First gear ratio of the TR-4050 because it will help improve the crawl ratio of the truck.

Other benefits of the TR-4050 include a max torque capacity of 600 pound-feet, which is double the rating of the NV3500. Additionally, the TR-4050 has high contact, constant mesh, and helical gears for maximum strength. It has advanced synchronizer technology for smoother shifting and reduced shift effort, and a multiple rail internal shifter that promotes smoother and easier shifting. The transmission also has a die-cast aluminum alloy housing. This saves weight while still offering substantial rigidity. The TR-4050 has needle bearings under gears to reduce friction and noise output, and tapered bearings under the input, main, and countershafts to help provide internal stability. Furthermore, there’s a Fifth gear synchronizer mounted to the countershaft to improve NVH. Finally, the transmission has a 10 spline input shaft, and the 23 spline output shaft will fit the Dodge factory transfer case.

More Benefits And Included Parts

American Powertrain says the ProFit HD 4WD Kit for the 1993-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 offers a 30-50 percent increase in fuel economy, reduced engine wear, and cooler engine operating temperature. In addition to the Tremec TR-4050, the kit includes a Mopar 4050 adapter bellhousing, new pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and American Powertrain White Lightning shifter. Additionally, the kit includes a shifter knob, reverse light harness, hardware, and instructions.

Works With 318ci And 360ci V8s And Hemi Swaps

One of the cool things about the kit is that it works with the factory hydraulic clutch system, driveshafts, transmission crossmember, and transfer case shifter, which makes the swap easier. It’s also worth noting that this kit works with either the 318ci or 360ci V8 and it can also be configured to work with a Gen III Hemi engine swap. American Powertrain notes that its flywheel kit and its bellhousing with a notch installed for the crank sensor is required for install behind 318ci and 360ci engines.
