Super Duty Upgrades With Heavy-Duty Wheels And Tires

When it comes time to replace the wheels and tires on your truck, what kind of capability considerations come into play? If you have a multi-purpose rig that has to do it all, it is best to source some serious super duty upgrades. Quality rubber and good-looking wheels will pay noticeable dividends on your 3/4-ton or 1-ton. With that in mind, we went the extra mile to consider the implications of what we needed on a special project.

Lloyd Hunt’s 2015 F-250 Super Duty is a daily driver truck used occasionally as a tow rig and also for off-road recreational missions. His family enjoys excursions to go shooting, fishing, and hiking, and these outings require a bit of off-road trail trekking. The truck had already received a major Super Duty upgrade in the form of a BDS Suspension lift, but now it needed new tires and proper heavy-duty wheels. At the time, it was sporting 20-inch wheels and 35-inch Toyo Open Country A/T II tires that were worn down.

Lloyd explains, “I had plans for a proper suspension upgrade. It needed to be reliable for towing the trailer, and have the ability to go off-grid with a bunch of usable features. I chose to go with a 6-inch BDS suspension system with their Recoil Traction Bars based on reputable quality and we knew it would allow for further Super Duty upgrades. These enhancements included a Fox steering stabilizer, and Fox 2.5-inch shocks. Now the ride was greatly improved, comfort notched up, and the stability was dialed in.”

“The truck rode much better,” Hunt continues. “However, the old 35s and 20s were looking tired and dated. Running F-load tires with 90psi left a lot to be desired and I knew we could get more comfort with new tires. The other issue I had was the weak look of the now 6-inch lifted Super Duty with the 35-inch tires.”

We consulted with Lloyd and coaxed him to drop the wheel size from a 20-inch to an 18-inch. This change would give more tire sidewall. A larger 37-inch Toyo Open County R/T Tire with an E-load rating seemed like the ticket and the stiffness would be erased. This would allow a smooth comfortable ride that could handle a heavy tow load and still tackle dirt trails nicely.

These tires were recommended for Lloyd’s application because of their hybrid qualities. They offer terrific off-road performance with supreme on-road comfort. It is a purpose-built 4×4 tire that offers excellent traction, durable construction, and aggressive styling. The best part is that they come with a 45,000-mile treadwear warranty and you can buy and try for 500 miles or 45 days in the trial offer.

Super Duty Upgrades With Heavy-Duty Wheels

Just as proper tires are vital to a big truck performing day after day, heavy-duty purpose-built wheels are very necessary when it comes to offering durable reliability. Beyond that, Lloyd desired something visually appealing in a way that would match the look of his truck. We pointed him toward the Method Race Wheels 305-HD NV in a bronze matte finish with a black bead lip.

Available in bronze or matte black, Method 305 NV heavy-duty wheels carry a 4,500-pound load rating!

Besides the stylish iconic 12-window design, this wheel was made to carry the load. In fact, it boasts a heavy-duty load rating of 4,500 pounds to handle larger hauls. Other stylized features include an undercut lip to simulate a beadlock wheel and replaceable lip bolts. These same eight-lug wheels are also available in a matte black finish.

Method 305-HD NV Wheel Main Features:

  • Solid A356 aluminum with T6 heat treatment construction
  • Iconic 12 window design with debossed METHOD logos
  • Street-Loc V.1 lip with undercut simulates true beadlock wheel
  • Replaceable MRW lip bolts with optional colors available
  • Push through center cap with embossed METHOD logo
  • Industry’s best lifetime structural warranty
  • Heavy Duty (HD) 4,500-pound load rating for maximum payload

When all the parts arrived, Hunt was eager to get them on but still wanted to see how it would all look. He unpackaged a few of the new digs and positioned everything into place for a mockup picture. Lloyd noted that Method Race Wheels offer numerous opportunities for personalization. From various stylized center caps to colored lip bolts, appropriate lug hardware, and even high-end anodized valve stem caps, there were plenty of customization options.

Opting for security and a touch of color, Hunt landed on the black spline lugs and Method Orange valve stem caps. He also got an extra set of TPMS sensors so he could sell off the old rubber and wheels as a package deal.

Lloyd made an appointment at the local America’s Tire and loaded up his truck with the new goodies. The Ranch Icon Truck Cap and LoadMaster StorMaster Combo Cargo Management System made for easy and secure transportation. When it was all said and done, the F-250 was back on the road and ready for the next adventure with fresh tires and wheels.

“The great thing about the Toyo RT is they have an aggressive tread and still are perfect for the rig that spends a lot of the time on pavement. I knew the ride was going to be great, but I think what surprised me the most was they were near silent. I rode in a stock F-250 from the dealer and the road noise as well as the ride comfort was nowhere near the quality of what I was getting with my new setup. I have the looks, style, and performance on point with BDS Suspension, Fox Shocks, Method Wheels, and Toyo Tires.” – Vehicle Owner Lloyd Hunt
