The 2021 Sand Sports Super Show was held September 17-19 in Costa Mesa, California at the Orange County fairgrounds. Usually known for eccentric UTV builds, more high performance sand cars than ever were on display this year. No matter where you found yourself throughout the weekend, the show did not disappoint with builds! Sand Sports Super Show Top 5 Build #1: Speed UTV Robby Gordon Edition El Jefe
The Robby Gordon Edition of the El Jefe carries a $41,999 MSRP
Speed UTV arguably stole the show when Robby Gordon took the covers off his signature Robby Gordon Edition El Jefe. The 4-door is being designed to compete in the Baja 1000 from the factory. Skipping the cheaper bolt-together tubular frame construction of other side-by-sides, Robby Gordon instead opted for frames constructed of seamless, triangulated tubing, although the roof is still removable. Because the majority of the buyers won’t be using these in sanctioned races, the UTVs are designed with doors in mind. However, Speed UTV will offer pre-cut and pre-notched tubes to weld in across the door openings and create a race-legal frame.
Sand Sports Super Show Top 5 Build #2: Rockford Fosgate Ranger
Rockford Fosgate built this Polaris Ranger for Destination Polaris Project X
Second to the El Jefe, Rockford Fosgate‘s Project X Ranger must have been the vehicle with the most butts in its seats. Touting over 58 speakers and 10,000W of power, Rockford Fosgate custom built this Polaris Ranger to stand out amongst the crowd. With 8 subwoofers directly behind the rear seats and another 8 speakers overhead, the volume was so loud the rear doors could not be closed due to liability issues. Most of the height gain comes from the portal axles, but HCR was trusted to handle the suspension and drivetrain. See the entire build on Destination Polaris here.
Sand Sports Super Show Top 5 Build #3: Project Titan @ Proline Wraps
Project Titan is a huge JK rocking 43’s and ORI air struts; this Jeep doesn’t need a path or a trail. Go check out @oh_that_1_dude on instagram and watch him wheel this thing. Owned by Adam and Kayla from Northern California, this Jeep constantly frequents the Rubicon on their way to the grocery store. That’s not just hyperbole, they actually drive this thing on the highway, “our limit is about 200 miles before we start to think about trailering it” says Kayla.
Sand Sports Super Show Top 5 Build #4: BDS Suspension’s Project Go Beyond
This behemoth of a vehicle originally debuted at the 2019 SEMA show. Starting with a 2020 F350 and adding a BDS-suspension 4” radius arm kit, the truck was given some bumper and fender treatments to clear 40” tires. With a utility bed housing more tools than your mechanic uses in a week, a rooftop tent, a portable kitchen and an Addictive Desert Designs bumper housing a Warn winch, Project Go Beyond is built to handle anything – except compact parking spaces. Sand Sports Super Show Top 5 Build #5: Buckshot Racing X2RL
The Buckshot X2LR sat so quietly between the VisionX and Morgan Motorsports booths
Out of all the sand cars at the show, this Buckshot Racing X2LR sitting at the VisionX booth was the prettiest. Owned and painted by Lusso Auto Spa & Design of Nevada, the blue and orange paint’s metallic flakes reflected in the afternoon sun and attracted show goers from every angle. The complementary theme continued from the roof to the hood, down through the tubular chassis and onto the King shocks, which had a custom baby blue powder coat on the coils. Finishing the build were baby blue wheels with orange beadlocks. If you’re in the market for an 1800-hp sand car, this one was listed for sale!
The Lusso Auto Spa & Design painted X2LR was one of the prettiest cars at the show. The blue and orange theme went all the way throughout the car, all the way down to the tube chassis and King shocks.
The Sand Sports Super Show is always popular and is kind of the official kick off start for the local sand dune recreation season. For 2021, it seemed way more packed with attendees than we have seen in a long time.
