When you think Lamborghini, you think of supercars and supermodels, yachts, the whole nine yards. These high-end machines are not only symbols of wealth, but also pure asphalt animals designed to zip around tracks like nobody’s business. So when B Is For Build picked up a Huracan to give it an off-road treatment, it definitely caught people’s attention!
The Huracan build started back in late November of last year. Host Chris Steinbacher explained that he’d already done two Huracan builds in the past, and wanted to do something different the third time around. “The opportunity to build something insane out of a Lamborghini is too good to pass up,” he said. “Welcome to the ‘Jumpacan!'”
So far, the team’s taken care of several aspects of the car. These include building and installing long-travel suspension, mounting the engine, constructing a cage, and more. This latest video shows the guys putting together the steering for the car, which will use rack-and-pinion steering. It also showcases the fabrication of front CV axles to give the car grip on all four corners.
The steering, centered around a Howe rack-and-pinion, fixates inside four pieces of tubing that tie into the cage. This protects it from damage and keeps it centered. The servo also needs to find a home to connect to the rack, as Chris explains.
Time-lapse footage shows the process as the steering shaft feeds through the firewall, going diagonal to get to the steering rack, and then figuring out how to hook the servo into the rack. “We’re hoping this is gonna work,” says Chris. “It’s definitely gonna be something that we have to bolt up and then test.”
After hooking up the shaft to the servo to the rack, it’s almost possible to steer the front tires. After Chris’ colleague, Oscar, fabricates mounts for the steering shaft, the Jumpacan gets its front end jacked up to test the steering out. Oscar demonstrates the steering, which works perfectly without noises or binding issues.
