SEMA 2019: Meziere’s Mechanical Water Pump For The LS Platform

A cooling system is one of the most overlooked areas of a vehicle. After all, a factory water pump is sufficient for a stock car, so why change it?

This engine is built for an LS-powered sandrail and needed a water pump that could handle the abuse.

As you add power to a vehicle or change its demands, you will quickly figure out that OE water pumps have their limits. It might leave you stranded on the side of the road due to overheating or ending your race day early due to engine damage. While electric water pumps are superior with flow and power numbers, they don’t do well in harsh environments. An excellent example of this is LS-powered offroad racers and other extreme forms of racing — these vehicles tend to take a beating from the elements, including high RPM, huge horsepower, heat, and vibration. Luckily, Meziere has a robust mechanical water pump that can hold up to the demands of high-horsepower extreme racing applications.

We talked to Joel Meziere about the applications that require a mechanical water pump. Joel said, “One example is Drag Week competitors — some of those guys don’t run an overdrive transmission and are spinning the water pumps at a high RPM for hours on end. This mechanical pump is perfect for them.” Joel continues, “Drifters are also another great example — they mount the radiator 10-foot away in the trunk of the car. This radiator placement, combined with high horsepower and high RPM for an extended duration requires a mechanical water pump.”
