19-year-old Scottsdale, Arizona driver Cole Potts burst onto the scene in Stadium Super Trucks when he took a hard-fought victory at Adelaide, Australia in only his first truck race on pavement. He battled back and forth with the fastest SST drivers before taking the lead for good and earning the win in his first season in the series.
Potts may be new to SST, but he has been competing for years in the desert behind the wheel of a big, bad unlimited trophy truck. When not competing, he spends a lot of time in the desert, riding his motorcycle.
His performance in the Trophy Truck caught the eye of Robby Gordon, whose Speed Energy brand brought Potts onboard as one of their athletes in 2018. He was sitting 4th overall in points heading into the weekend at Glen Helen.
“SST is a blast,” says Potts. “It’s definitely cool to see all the circuits we do. We have been real fortunate to hit some good ones this year. Australia has been a blast. I plan on doing the Finke desert race over there next year; it looks pretty fun.”
“Whoops the whole way around is my style,” he continued. “I like to go all out, all the time. I am trying to break through and do some more road course stuff. I have some Trans Am stuff on the calendar for next year and some high downforce stuff too. Formula Mazda or Indy lights; Indy cars is where I would like to ultimately wind up, so I am working towards that goal.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of talking to a lot of the guys that have come up from the dirt to pavement like Jimmy Johnson, and they all have a set of skills that others don’t,” commented Potts. “You have to get out of the habit of sliding the back end around, though. That’s hard on the tires.”
