Sitting Softer On The Trail With A New Set Of Procar Seats By Scat

As off-roaders, we spend hours upon hours on the trail. After a long day in the dirt, even our bottom gets tired of sitting for long durations. We do not always realize how much we are sitting while we are enjoying our hobby.

Our Jeep Cherokee project vehicle has been seeing more and more time on the trail. To help Project XtremeJ, we turned to Procar [2] by Scat Enterprises to help find a more comfortable seat for both on the trail and around town.

Finding The Perfect Seat

The seats, at first glance, appeared better suited to a sports car, rather than a Jeep.

Scat has been offering seats since the early 80s, starting with VW bug seats. Procar’s line of seats includes traditional recliners, contemporary recliners, sport recliners, and fixed back seats

The company’s seat line has since progressed, and now, Procar has plenty of options: street rods, cruisers, pony cars, musclecars, off-road vehicles and buggies, trucks, and sport compacts. Also, you are looking for something your neighbor won’t have, Procar can customize any of its existing frames with different fabric, stitching pattern, and piping.

The craftsmanship can be seen up-close on the Procar seats.

For XtremeJ’s seats, we went with the Evolution seat. “The seat has a tubular steel seat base which is TIG welded for strength and durability,” Craig Schenasi of Scat Enterprises explained. “The Evolution seats have a fiberglass backing with a carbon fiber inlay and injection-molded foam, which ensures the seat will keep its shape and offer a comfortable, firm seating experience.”

Although, we would not be putting in harnesses, the seats can accommodate a five-point harness. The seat also features side bolstering for added support, and an adjustable recliner for incline and recline.

Mounting An Aftermarket Seat To A Factory Location

Scat makes a wide range of brackets that allow you to install one of their seats in the factory location. This means you won’t have to make custom mounts or build a cage with these brackets.

For our 2001 Jeep Cherokee, we were able to have Scat make the first set for this particular vehicle. Scat offers brackets for other Jeep models, including the CJ-5, Wrangler YJ, and Comanche Pickup.

Scat has a warehouse of seat bracket jigs. The company makes all of its brackets in-house.

“Sometimes, we have people drop off their vehicle for us to make the brackets,” Schenasi said. “We even have people send us cardboard templates to make new brackets.”

Procar offers replacement seat sliders for some seats, but for our Cherokee brackets, we were able to reuse the factory sliders. However, we ran into issues on the driver’s side.

Scat was able to reuse the factory seat mounts and sliders.

The floor pan on the Cherokee is flat on the passenger side, but has a raised area on the driver side to clear the transfer case. The raised section on the floor would not allow the seat to sit below a certain height.

Once the brackets were figured out, it was a quick swap of the seats and off to the trail. It was time to see how well the Procars held up against off-road abuse.

Cheers To A Comfy Ride

Most off-roaders care for a softer ride in regards to a new suspension, while others want to make sure they are comfortable on or off the trail. These seats are a great addition to the project and something that will see plenty of use.

“The Procar Seats by Scat add to the form, function, safety, and good looks of the XJ,” vehicle owner Kevin McIntosh said. “They look sporty and fit perfectly! The seats offer comfort and support right where you need it, and are suitable for everyday driving and off-road.”

The Procar Evolution seat seems smaller than the factory seat, but there are plenty of features packed into the Evolution.

“Everything fits perfectly with the factory mounts, seat belts, and the factory seat angle,” McIntosh continued. “The slimline carbon fiber backing also offers more rear leg room for passengers, which is an unexpected bonus. We now have the flexibility to use a standard factory seatbelt with performance seating, and can later accommodate a five-point harness.”

Before (left) and after (right) is where the real difference can be seen. The new seats make the interior of the Jeep look like a modern-day vehicle.

The seats are a great addition to a vehicle that is seeing more and more time on the trail. McIntosh will be more comfortable while he spends long days in the dirt.
